Birthdays got calendars, cakes and a whole card industry. Friendships, the relationships that hold most of us up, got nothing. In three years Friendiversary wants to be the place your friendship history lives.

YEAR1

The personal archive. Chats, photos and calendar history become a private friendship timeline. Yearly reminders with proof, collages and suggested words.

YEAR2

Both sides of the story. When two friends both use it, their evidence merges: "you think it was the charger, Amara says it was the flat viewing." A shared page that both can add to.

YEAR3

Friendship as an occasion. Group friendiversaries for old flatmates and teams, printed photo books on round numbers, and a gentle "you haven't talked in 8 months" layer that keeps people from drifting apart.

Why this is new

Birthday reminders live in every calendar, and photo apps resurface "on this day" memories at random. Neither knows when a friendship started. Friendiversary is the first app that mines your own message and photo history for the moment two people first connected, shows the evidence, and turns that date into a yearly occasion.

The data it runs on

Chat exports the user makes: WhatsApp "Export chat" (.txt in a .zip, per chat), Telegram Desktop "Export chat history" (JSON), Facebook and Instagram "Download your information" (JSON), Android SMS backup (XML). Parsed on device.
Photo dates: EXIF capture date plus the phone's on-device face grouping (Apple Photos or Google Photos people albums via the system photo picker). No pixels leave the phone.
Limits and gaps: WhatsApp exports cap at roughly 40,000 messages per chat without media, phone switches lose old history, and friendships that began offline leave no record. Group chats blur "first contact".
Fallback: when there is no trace, the user picks a date ("summer 2009, the hostel in Cusco") and the app marks it "remembered, not proven". Friends can confirm it from their side later.

1. The mission

Give every friendship the anniversary it never had. Find the day it began, prove it with the first message or photo, and make it easy to say "I remember" once a year.

2. Why people can't resist it

The archaeology thrill. Seeing the actual first message ("is this the charger you left?") is a jolt of nostalgia nobody can resist sharing.
Being remembered. Receiving "10 years ago today you sold me a rice cooker" feels more personal than any birthday wish.
Collection and streaks. Celebrating all eight close friends this year is a quiet goal people want to complete.

3. How it works for real

Parse on device. Plain code parsers per export format turn chats into (person, timestamp, first lines) rows. Photos give (date, face group) pairs.
Identity merge. A fast cheap model (Gemini Flash or DeepSeek via OpenRouter) gets only names and handles, never message text, and proposes "same person" links across apps. The user confirms.
Evidence ranking. Deterministic rules: a direct message beats a mention, a photo with both faces beats a follow, earliest strong evidence wins. Confidence drops when candidates disagree by weeks.
Context check. For the top candidate only, a short window (5 lines) is sent to a small model to confirm it is a real first contact, not a forwarded message or a bot.
Words and collage. A frontier LLM (Claude or GPT) writes three message drafts from the evidence line and timeline stats. The collage is laid out on device from the two chosen photos.
Voice and cards. Voice notes are recorded locally. Cards render as images on device and go out through the normal share sheet.

4. Cost per use

Pennies per user. Initial scan: about $0.01 (identity merge plus 8 to 30 short context checks). Each reminder with three drafts: about $0.002.
Free: up to 8 friends, reminders and text drafts. Paid ($2.99 a month or $19 a year): unlimited friends, collages, printed cards on round numbers, shared friendship pages.

5. Growth loop

Every celebration lands on a friend's phone with the proof ("our first message, 14 Oct 2016") and a link: "find the first day with your other friends." The receiver is the next user, and their scan confirms or corrects the date from their side. Each month one friend of the month gets the ritual: a reminder from the upcoming calendar, one new memory added to a timeline that keeps growing, so people come back monthly and the archive gets richer.

6. Risks and guardrails

Privacy: message text is parsed on device and discarded. Only date plus one approved quote is stored, encrypted.
Painful history: exes, people who passed away and blocked contacts are detected by gaps and labels and never surfaced without consent. One tap mutes a person forever.
Consent in sharing: the quote is only shown to the friend, never posted publicly by default.
Platform terms: uses user-made exports only, no scraping of anyone's account.
