Own less, access more. The average drill is used for 13 minutes in its whole life. LENDIT turns every street into a library of things, where a neighbour's tent, camera or projector is two minutes away, and AI condition checks plus an automatic deposit make lending to a stranger feel as safe as lending to a friend.
2. Why people can't resist it
Money from the cupboard. Seeing "your projector earned 96 CAD this month" turns clutter into a small side income, and people go looking for the next thing to list.
No awkward conversation. The photo check settles "was that scratch already there?" before anyone has to ask. Trust without confrontation.
Neighbourhood pride. The local shelf grows, you get a lender level and a thank-you wall. It feels like being the person on the street everyone knows.
3. How it works for real
Login: email or phone. A passkey smart wallet (Coinbase Smart Wallet, Privy or Dynamic) is created silently on Base. No seed phrase. A paymaster sponsors every transaction, so nobody ever sees gas.
Listing: a vision model (Gemini 2.5 Flash or GPT-4o mini via OpenRouter) identifies the item, brand class and visible condition from 3 photos. A fast cheap model (DeepSeek or Gemini Flash Lite) pulls comparable rentals and local search demand, then a pricing formula (value x wear x demand, not the LLM) proposes a day rate and a deposit.
Booking: the renter pays rent plus deposit in local money through an on-ramp (card, Interac, SEPA, bank transfer in Nigeria via a licensed partner). Funds become USDC on Base. Rent goes to a payout escrow; the deposit sits in a simple escrow contract keyed to this booking.
Handover check-in: both phones take guided photos (angles are prompted). A vision model marks existing marks as numbered pins with sizes. Both parties tap to agree, and the report hash is written to the escrow.
Return check-out: the same angles are photographed. The vision model compares before and after, aligned by keypoints, and lists only new differences with confidence scores. Normal wear rules are set per category.
Release: if nothing new is found and neither side flags anything for 2 hours, the contract returns the deposit automatically. If something is found, the owner files a small claim capped at the deposit; a frontier LLM like Claude drafts a neutral summary with both photo sets, and the renter accepts, counters or asks a human mediator.
Payout: USDC goes to the owner's wallet and off-ramps to their bank in CAD, EUR or NGN on request. x402 lets partner apps (moving vans, event planners) book items per request.
4. Cost per use
Listing analysis: about $0.01. Each condition check (6 photos, vision model): about $0.02 to $0.04. Claim summary with a frontier LLM: about $0.03. Gas on Base: under $0.01 per booking, sponsored. A full rental costs roughly $0.10 to run.
Free: list up to 5 items, borrow anything, AI checks on every rental. LENDIT takes 10% of rent (owner side) and a small renter service fee. Paid (LENDIT Plus, $4.99 per month): unlimited listings, instant payouts, priority mediation, and a 20 second animated "item story" clip for listings (still panels on free; a cheap video model like Wan at about $0.10 per second on paid).
5. Growth loop
Every rental involves two neighbours, and half of renters list something within a month because the earnings card shows them how. Owners share "my tent paid for itself" cards, and street-level "shelf" pages get posted in local groups. Each new item raises the odds the next searcher finds something nearby.
6. Risks and guardrails
Damage disputes: the AI only proposes; claims are capped at the deposit, both sides see the same evidence, and human mediators handle appeals within 48 hours.
Dangerous items: no weapons, no vehicles in v1, power tools need a safety checklist and an age gate.
Theft and fraud: ID check for owners and renters over a deposit threshold, deposits sized to item value, pickup codes, and a block list.
Privacy: exact addresses shown only after booking; map pins are fuzzed by 150 m. Condition photos are kept 30 days after release, then deleted.
Money: on and off ramps through licensed partners; LENDIT never holds customer funds outside the escrow contract.
7. MVP build order
Email login with a smart wallet on Base Sepolia, list an item with 3 photos and a vision-model price suggestion.
Browse nearby on a map, book dates, deposit into a test USDC escrow contract.
Guided check-in and check-out photos, vision compare with pinned differences.
Auto release after a quiet window, plus a simple claim flow with evidence.
