Audiences are tired of announcements that never ship: demos promised "soon", podcasts that stop after three episodes, shops that never open. Builders who mean it have no way to prove it, so they lose the trust of the people who would back them. A promise with nothing at stake reads the same as one with everything at stake.
What exists and what is new
Closest: Kickstarter's refund rules, which are rarely enforced, and personal commitment-contract apps where the money goes to a charity or a referee. New: stakes that pay fans automatically when a deadline is missed, checked by AI against public proof, with a public promise record and a believe pool that rewards the creator when they deliver.
The data it runs on
The promise, the deadline and the shipped proof: the pledge text and schedule, public devlog posts or episodes with their timestamps, build files and store pages for ship checks, and (optionally, read-only) the creator's commits for drafting. Fans' believe amounts decide how slashes are split.
1. The mission
Make "I promise" mean something online again. Every creator and builder gets a public promise record backed by money and checked by AI, so fans can tell who keeps their word and back them early.
2. Why people can't resist it
Commitment devices work. Money on the line plus a public audience is the strongest known push to do the thing.
Fans get skin in the game. Believing is cheap, visible and pays a little if the creator slips, so it feels safe to back early.
Streaks and a record. A Friday streak and a "20 kept" record are trophies people protect and show off.
3. How it works for real
Accounts and money: email login with a passkey smart wallet (Privy or Coinbase Smart Wallet). Stakes and believe amounts are paid by card and held as USDC on Base in a pledge contract; gas sponsored. Payouts to fans are batched to keep fees tiny.
Proof checks: a scheduled worker fetches the proof link at each deadline. A fast cheap model (Gemini Flash or DeepSeek via OpenRouter) checks date, public visibility and newness against past posts; a vision model compares images and clips with recent builds.
Ship checks: a clean cloud test machine downloads the build, boots it, and runs a short input bot; the store page is checked for a public listing. For non-games: a podcast feed, a newsletter archive, a business listing with photos.
Drafting help: a frontier LLM (Claude) drafts devlogs from commit messages in the creator's style, only as drafts the creator edits and posts.
Settlement: a deterministic rules engine signs slash and release events; the contract splits slashes pro rata to believers and returns the stake on ship.
Disputes: a human reviewer can overturn a check within 48 hours.
4. Cost per use
Weekly proof check with a Flash-class model: about $0.003. A 20-week pledge: about $0.06 of checks. Ship check on a cloud machine: about $0.10 to $0.30. Devlog drafts: about $0.01 each. Gas on Base for batched payouts: about $0.02 per settlement.
Free: one pledge up to $100 stake, public record. Paid: 3% of the believe pool on ship (only if the creator delivers), or $6 a month for unlimited pledges, ship checks and drafting. Fans always believe for free beyond card fees.
5. Growth loop
Each pledge page is shared by the creator to their audience, and believers join to back it; every page has a "make your own pledge" button that other creators see. Shipped and slashed moments both make shareable posts, and believers become creators of their own pledges.
6. Risks and guardrails
Gambling concerns: fans cannot bet against a creator, believe amounts are capped, and slashes are refunds plus small compensation, not winnings. Check local rules; this is general information, not legal advice.
Unfair checks: grace periods, announced skips, and human review for any disputed check.
Harassment: a missed Friday shows a factual record, not a comment pile-on; comments can be limited by the creator.
Impersonation: Pledged never posts as the creator; drafts only.
7. MVP build order
Pledge page with a card-funded stake on Base Sepolia and a public URL.
Weekly proof link submission with an AI date and newness check.
Believe pool with capped fan amounts and pro-rata slash payouts.
Ship check for one kind of proof (a public store page plus a build download).
